Logansport is the county seat of Cass County, Indiana and is located in the central portion of the state. It is situated at the junction of the Eel and Wabash Rivers and is just northeast of Lafayette. This is one of a handful of communities in the U.S. that has been designated as a Preserve America Community.
History of Logansport
The first settler in the area known as Logansport today was a man by the name of Alexander Chamberlain. Chamberlain came to the area in 1826 and built a cabin where he provided temporary shelter for travelers who were passing through his land. He named his little settlement Logansport after his friend Captain Logan.
During 1828, more people settled in Logansport and began clearing more and more of the land. Almost overnight, the town exploded with growth due mainly to its canal that provided the town with commercial transportation. However, when the railroad made its way through Logansport, canal transportation became obsolete, and the town became a major railroad town.
